Welcome to Fidalgo Island Quilters
We are a very diverse group of women and men (yes! There are a few) from all over Skagit, Whatcom, Island, Snohomish and San Juan counties who love the fiber medium and its range of possibilities. We are traditional, contemporary and art quilters. We are dyers, stampers, beaders, felters and stitchers. We create quilts for the Skagit County Domestic Abuse Center and for cancer victims; wearable art garments and accessories, and we share our creative efforts at our annual Quilt Walk and bi-annual Quilt Show.
From September through June we hold two general meetings on the first Monday of the month. Our meeting format includes guild business, announcements, guest lectures, social time and “Show and Share”. The Board of Directors holds its general meeting, which is open to all members, before the day meeting. On the third Monday of the month Community Quilts, the Wearables Group, the Art Quilters and other small groups meet. We schedule several classes during the year that cover a broad spectrum of techniques by hosting national, regional and local instructors to provide a variety of program choices. And we host an annual Quilt Camp in the Fall.
As a guild member, there are some mandatory responsibilities:
We are a 501(C)3 organization because we make quilts for the Domestic Abuse Center. Every child and parent who utilizes the shelter receives a quilt made by us. To facilitate this activity, we have Community Quilt days where you can select kits of fabric, batting, etc.; you can work with a group or on your own – we just ask that all Guild members participate in this worthwhile endeavor.
April is our bi-annual Quilt Show and downtown Anacortes Quilt Walk held in conjunction with the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Guild members in good standing and who participate on a Quilt Show committee can display their quilts and wearables at the show. The Quilt Walk runs during the entire month of April and members are encouraged to “adopt” shops to display their quilts and wearables for the delight of tourists, merchants and locals. We encourage all members to participate in these events.
Every year Guild members design and construct a raffle quilt. Your membership dues include 10 raffle tickets for this quilt that you may either sell or keep for yourself. You are asked to help sell raffle tickets at various venues throughout the year to raise the funds necessary to support our community service programs.
Your participation in guild events is what makes our organization so special. On behalf of myself and the other Board members and Committee Chairs, WELCOME to FIQ. We look forward to getting to know you better.
Patti Olds, President 2007-2009
