Marcia Berg — Member of the Second Quarter 2011
Like many people, I became aware of quilting while helping Mom with “good warm quilts” for the family beds. I got to press the wool squares. I did make quilts for our daughter’s beds in the ‘60’s, but that was a time I when I was in love with polyester double-knit so those suckers will live forever.
When we retired and moved to Anacortes, I took a beginning class from Cathy Berk. (Faye Canfield was in that class and boy, did she leave me in the dust.) Cathy invited us to attend an FIQ meeting, and I became the 100th member. That was 1994. I was so impressed with how willing everybody was to share their time and talents and volunteering for whatever jobs needed filling.
A couple years later, Carol Chapman announced that she needed help with Community Quilts so I raised my hand. It has been such a rewarding experience to see how excited everybody gets about sharing their talents and making quilts for someone they will never meet but who need the comfort our little quilts can give. Every time we would have a looming deadline I would call Carol in a panic saying we would never have enough quilts finished. Carol would make a soothing noise and, of course, we would have more quilts than expected by deadline day.
