AMERICAN HERO QUILTS – September 2011
Twenty one quilt tops were dispatched in September. Many of these quilts will go directly to Afghanistan where they are given to our military wounded, right on the tarmac while they awaiting evacuation. This is one way we, as quilters, can respond to the nightly news about casualties. Look for more kits to be available at the next FIQ meeting. Consider working on an American Hero Quilt for Veteran’s Day! You’ll be glad you did. Thank you, Lynn Scoby
AMERICAN HERO QUILTS……………..An Appeal
As you may know, this project gives a Quilt of Comfort to military personnel, wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, and recovering at Madigan Army Hospital. We have been enjoying the ability to send tops that are finished by volunteer long arm quilters. The demand has been so great for so long that they are falling behind. Are there any quilters willing to quilt some of the tops we have on hand for our wounded sons and daughters? If so, please contact us.
Did you grow up with stories about coupons and rationing? Do you remember how the vets returning from Vietnam were “welcomed” home? When you hear the mounting statistics on the news do you wonder what to do to comfort our wounded returning from Iraq?
We can do what quilters do best! We can make quilts that send a “hug” of appreciation to our sons and daughters and their families who have sacrificed to protect us.
The goal of the American Hero Project is to give a quilt to each of our war-wounded at Madigan Army Hospital and other local hospitals. The quilt tops should be patriotic colors, approximately 60” X 72” and any quilt pattern. Some kits for making tops are available at FIQ meetings. Watch for work party dates. Quilt tops or completed quilts are sent to Vashon Island for finishing & delivery to Madigan. To contact our local group Click Here.
