Fidalgo Island Quilters is Actively Involved in Our Community
Community Quilts work sessions are now held at the Cottage Hobby House at 1220 12th Street (at M Avenue), Anacortes at 10am on the 3rd Monday each month.
Our Guild donates crib or lap-size quilts that are in turn given to the more than 300 children and moms a year, who pass through the Skagit County Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Shelter in Mount Vernon. Our quilts offer comfort and security during a critical time in their lives. As a result of these donations, the IRS has granted us a 501(c)3 – tax-free – status.
Although the Guild requests that each member make one Community Quilt each year, many of our members are making far more. The Chairladies have gone over the edge to come up with some easy and fun ways to make your quilt. There are Quilt Kits and patterns available for your use. The Guild will provide fabric and batting. You don’t need to piece it, quilt it AND bind it – you can just piece or quilt or bind if that is what you like to do. You can also cut fabric, wash/iron fabric, or sandwich quilt tops if you prefer.
All we ask is that you do your part in our effort to comfort these folks who are going through a very stressful time in their lives. Please take a minute to stop by the Community Quilt table at one of the regular Guild meetings or come by on Community Quilt day (see the Event Calendar). One of the ladies will be happy to help you get started. Or call one of the Community Quilt contact people for ways to get involved with this worthwhile endeavor.
In 2008, loyal quilters from FIQ complete 372 quilts to give to the shelters. Considering that we have over two hundred member, many members made more than their required one. Suzanne Lockridge asked me why there was such an outpouring of quilts. Certainly the challenge this summer helped get a jumpstart as pointed out by Carol Chapman, however in these troubled times, FIQ members are so grateful for what they have and are willing to share the bounty with those less fortunate. Some of the quilts were incredibly intricate, not to mention beautiful. We as a group can be very proud of this accomplishment. Congratulation to all who made Community Quilts.
