This book will show you the easy way to make a landscape wall hangings, post card, small quilts or whatever you decide to do. Very good pictures and easy to follow instructions. She shows easy ways to making curved borders, add embellishment, and how to add borders that will enhance your work. Also, touches on using your own photos to create your project.

Quilt –Lover’s Favorites

Thank you, Bruce, for donating the five Better Homes and Gardens “Quilt –Lovers’ Favorites” books. The blocks and patterns are mostly traditional, but some have a nice new twist. Good book for beginner’s or experienced quilters. Really like the spiral binding on these books. Colored photos and instructions very well done.

“My Stars!” is History . . .

Well, the show is over, and Kae and I have had very positive comments from many people. Of course, there were stumbles here and there, and that’s to be expected. We’re busy gathering comments and suggestions for how we might tweak, change, add, or delete procedures and content for the 2014 show. Kae and I have asked committee chairs for specific input, but we’d like to hear from everyone. What did you like? What could we do better?

Total paid attendance was 1180. If memory serves me, that’s a few more than in 2010. About 40-45 children participated, and our best guess is that 200 members and guests attended the Preview Party. So, about 1420 people saw our show! Evelyn reports that in the first hour on Friday we sold 200 tickets! Sales at the FIQ Boutique were brisk, and vendors reported good sales. We had about 295 quilted items registered plus our wonderfully creative Community Quilts. And . . . We have many quilts hung in the Quilt Walk!

Here’s what Kae and I loved about the show:

We loved the enthusiasm and wonderful interaction between our Featured Artists, guild members, and visitors. We loved that Joanne Ellsworth had the opportunity to see so many longtime friends from the Anacortes boating community. We loved that Kathy Howe has been invited to be a Featured Artist in the upcoming Tri-Cities Quilt Show.

We loved Eva Fox’s new demonstration area, the children’s quilt block design activity, and the opportunity for quilt appraisals.

We loved being able to acknowledge two charter members, Bernice Haner and Cathy Berk, and we loved Nancy Hanson’s display of 30 years of FIQ history.

We loved the raffle quilt display.
We loved the spirit of cooperation and mutual support.
We loved the shopping opportunities.
We loved not having to iron sheets (did anyone notice?).
And, of course, we loved sharing our works of art, from humble to spectacular!

So . . . A recap of award winners . . .

SUE LARSEN

Sue first visited Anacortes about 20 years ago when she and her husband moored their sail boat here. After many years of visiting this area from Columbus, Ohio, they decided to retire here. They rented a house while their home was being built. Sue’s husband worked as a Mechanical Engineer and Sue managed their rental property. The have three daughters, and one son. One daughter lives in Seattle with three children, one daughter in Phoenix with two daughters, and another daughter and a son in Dayton, Ohio with three grandchildren.

She heard about our guild from Cora Rolfe at the library book club. Her daughter in Phoenix is a very accomplished quilter, and has had her quilts featured in magazines. Sue made a queen size impressionist quilt and hand quilted it. She then took on a huge project making a quilt that represented the German style village where she lived in Ohio. She sketched the 30 houses and made patterns to applique them on the quilt. When finished the quilt was 7′X10′ . She had the builders of her home here add a wall large enough to hang it on. She is currently restoring an antique quilt, and when not quilting she likes to work in her yard and garden.

Ronda Lee

Ronda recently moved to Mt. Vernon. Previously she had lived in Olympia and worked in the Administrative Offices of the Courts. Her work involved computer training, computer conversions, which involved traveling around the state. She also did telephone support for the Accounting Office. She recently retired having worked there for 20 years.

Ronda has a daughter and two step-daughters, one daughter is soon to be married and Ronda is busy making a wedding quilt for her She has been quilting for about 12 years and likes to make traditional quilts and wall hangings.

Ronda heard about our guild while attending the Monroe Quilt show and talking with Pat Thompson. She is looking forward to the inspiration, and friendship our guild can offer.

In Suzanne’s book she has given you 15 different quilt patterns to try using batik fabric. In the
beginning of the book she explains the difference in batik fabrics such as Ikat, Tulis, Songket,
Stamped Batik, and how it is made. Her patterns are well written and look easy to follow.
Several of the patterns feature applique techniques, and several use the Bali Pop 2-1.2” strips.

Thanks to Susan for donating this book to the guild. I am sure many of you are ready to try
some of her patterns after her presentation at the March meeting.

The book contains many examples of quilts made from her strip set quilting technique. The
instructions are well written and look easy to follow. You will find many beautiful colored
photos of her projects.
